I recently tried to play video files from an exterior HDD on my netbook. Yuck. Each section was approx 1.5 gb long and then would close. Should I be ripping ISO files? Does this have to do with the FAT 32 system? I want to carry one or 2 ext HDDs and hook them to netbook to watch movies rather than carry 50-60 discs with me. Weight gets old. I tried VTS files but had the 4 section issue. If my explanation is not clear, please let me know. I do own these movies. Thanx
The first thing that you should do with your external, especially if you are using it to store movies, is to convert to NTFS. Next we will need a little more information. What player are you using to try and play these files? What format are they in? If you use the ISO file format, then you will have to have virtual drive to mount it on before you can play it.
How do I convert to NTFS? I ripped the movies to ext HDD using Clone DVD2; I have 2 dvd players on the netbook - Corel PowerDVD and WinDVD. When I would double click on the video file, Corel PowerDVD would open and play the first of the 4 files. I do have other files on the ext HDD; will converting to NTFS affect them? Thanx
If you only have around 4 files per movie, it sounds as though you ripped the main movie only without the extras. Is that correct? If so you should have a group of .vob files such as VTS_01_1,VTS_01_2, and so on. You should also have an .ifo file to go along with them such as VTS_01_0.ifo. That is the file you should click on in order to play the whole set as one.
Theoretically, converting to NTFS will not harm your files. But I am not going to tell you to go through with it, that is your call. How To
