I just got Flight of the Concords box set on dvd. I want to rip the dvd so that I have each individual episode as a file on my computer so that I don't have to rummage through discs. How can you do this?

*I'm familiar with ripping with DVD Shrink and getting the Video_TS, but here we have individual episodes I'd like to have.

once you have selected video & its been scanned,to the right there is a button called re-author that's how you select the individual titles it is also how to get to cut front & end frames

ok so the first link is main movie only however it still applies since when your movie is scanned & you've navigated to re-author,you will see in the "titles" list the main movie usually title 1 but not always "usually the largest" with a tv series you will get the main movie (individual titles joined as tho they were one)so to speak but below it there will be individual titles also, those titles are the episodes that your after, simply right click on any title & add,now click compression setting (personally i prefer to leave title at no compression this allows the converter software to do any compressing i might want),now if you right click the title you've just added in the left column you can now cut the start & end frames removing intro & the outro (credits) this allows more space for better quality encode later, now that's done select backup which will give option of where you want to place it by using browse,if you have already set pre-named folders you can either have shrink create video_ts folders inside them or what i do is just have shrink place raw files directly into the folder without need of video_ts folder creation, now your confused your on your own :P

ps:to not create video_ts folder deselect it from the window that appears when after cliking backup

guides section has tuts on using shrink it's below "how to"

Thank You that was straight forward. DVD shrink worked like a charm. How the big question is how do I convert a .vob to an .avi or .mpg? Can you suggest a program. I have pinnacle studio. Any websites? I wouldn't even mind purchasing a video conversion software.

No need to purchase anything to convert or rip or create dvd's as for conversion it's a piece of cake, you can use shrink to cut a small section of a movie out say 100mb-300mb to use as practice for converting to see results before doing a large one

menushrink..removes animation from dvd's makes it faster to navigate & can save space 10mb-800mb,a backup of what was removed is kept in the original video_ts folder you removed it from

fixvts..repair vts after ripping...i don't use it that often

dvdfab hd decrypter can be used for free to rip dvd's that shrink can't due to later protections,it can encode tho i prefer standalone encoders like vid coder or staxrip as there's more options for final output

hands on encoders:
vidcoder...convert to mp4 or mkv..
handbrake..big brother to vidcoder, doesn't use target size like vc does
stax rip..covert to avi..downside to avi is subs inclusion is a pain ass to do however avi has high compatability with older hardware

ones i normally don't use unless i have too some i haven't used
freemakevideo converter
xmedia recode
video to video

handy tools:-
virtual dub mod
MeGui
dvdstyler

Got this crowd from member attar in a reply he made a number of months ago its a great source of info since they deal with videos ,there'll be plenty of free software there too as well as tuts if you can't find anything in the guides section here or forums

http://www.videohelp.com/

finally before embarking on your batch conversion once it's all sorted you need to keep in mind what you intend to view these encodes on as an example i'd want to watch them on an original xbox (not a 360) as wsell as a computer,so i have to be sure i set the encoder manually to ffmpg for staxrip or mpg2.libav for vidcoder as both programs will auto select encoder to say h.264 which the xbox can't decode well,if you don't manually set & save as new preset it will revert to it's original settings
