I have a DVD of Spirited Away, the Disney english dubbed one. Ive tried a movie-only rip of it with several programs, DVD shrink, DVD decrypter, DVD rebuilder, and DVDfab 5. With DVD deccrypter and DVDfab, they give me a CRC error about half way though. DVD shrink and DVD rebuilder give me an I/O error, also about half way though ripping. Ive tried ripping just angle 1 and just angle 2 of the main movie (there are two angles, I think one is with japanese credits and the other english.) None work. What could be wrong here? Ive read other threads on this movie which say its possible to do with just DVD shrink, but I cant get it to work. My DVD shrink, DVD decrypter and DVD rebuilder are all latest version. From what ive read about CRC errors, it could mean its a skrached disk. Could this be possible? Even if the movie plays perfectly in a DVD player or on my computer?
I ripped this so long ago i can't remember what i used, though i'm pretty sure it was just DVD Shrink. As you seem to have tried everything it would appear that either the disc is damaged, or the drive you're using to rip isn't up to the job.
I personally use a DVD-ROM/CD-writer combo drive (6yrs old now) and a dvd burner (both just happen to be LG drives) for my ripping. Not all optical drives are equal when it comes to ripping. For example i have loads of Benq DW1650 drives, excellent burners but can't rip all discs, and once in a blue moon the LG drives can't rip something whereas the DW1650's can. Wierd but by having a choice of drives i don't get stumped by any troublesome discs.
If its a damaged disk, does it explain why it still can be played perfectly on a dvd player? I assume there is some kind of error correction, or the player just skips that small area where there is an error or skratch? If its a small enough skratch, couldn't I just skip that part of the disk and use the rest of the good sectors for a copy?
It can't be an encryption problem as DVD Shrink alone can do this disc (as far as i recall anyways), and even if Shrink couldn't handle it, DVDFab most certainly can.
Playing perfectly on a DVD player only sort of proves the disc doesn't appear to be damaged. As i say, over and above DVDFab, the only other way to resolve this is to try another DVD-ROM or burner drive..
There were different protections used on this film (it was in a transition phase) .. The rental ones were a nightmare.. the retail depends on region. ri4m was written with this film in mind.. give that a shot.
