Subtitle failure part-way using AutoGK

Hello,
I have a Asus Netbook running Windows 7 Starter, SP1, with 2 GB of RAM.
I used ?DVD Shrink? 2.2 to back up a DVD [using a USB-connected external optical drive] to my hard disk and then I used ?AutoGK? 2.55 to convert the backed up file to ?.AVI? format.
Unfortunately, about 1 hour and 3 minutes into the .AVI movie file, which is in French, its English subtitles just cease appearing. (The original DVD has the English subtitles all the way through.)

Please note that the name of the movie comprises one letter only. It is called ?Z?.
Also the operating system is as I have said above and not as stated in the log file.

Assuming that it's only happened with this particular disk, you could extract the subs from the DVD using 'VobSub Configure' and look at the timestamps in the .idx file to see if they are all there.
If they are, use Ctrl F8 in AGK to open the external subs menu and add the .idx.
Set the output to 'Target Quality' 75 instead of 2 cd or custom (it runs in half the time) and see if they are present.
Edit:forget about loading the .idx/vob file - it doesn't burn them to the video.
Edit2:Disregard the first edit, it does burn the subs.I knew it did, but wanted to test it on a short clip;I forgot that if you make a clip in DVD Shrink and save it as a DVD, the subtitles retain their original timing which means that when extracted and used in AGK, they won't show up on the preview.
Hope you're as confused as I am.

Hello Attar,
Thanks for your response. The "Preview" is not a factor here, as I tested the resulting .avi file in both Microsoft Media Player, and also VLC Media Player.
I have successfully converted one DVD to .avi previously, but the current one is the first DVD I have tried to convert which requires English subtitles.
As I am not expert in using the two applications in question, if you have a solution in mind, I would need the procedure set out in clear steps, letting me know which application is being used, and in which dialog boxes, that the procedure should be carried out. (I know how to do the normal procedure.)
Please also make it clear if the solution will be for fixing the current .avi file (not likely I expect), or for a new attempt.
As it is, I confess I would not know how to carry out your comments as explained in their current form.
Further details:
The target file was called "VTS_01_0.IFO", which was the only file that produced the required English subtitle option.
"Video info: MPEG2 720x480 NTSC 4:3 PGC 1. Length 2:06:46:06".
"Custom size" was selected with 1400 MB.
"Target quality" was set to 75%.
This is what I see on the screenshot that I took of the AutoGK dialog box.
I hope it will be possible to find a solution to this issue as I would not want to spend a further 8 hours, 44 minutes, 25 seconds on it (!), without some possibility of success.

The simplest solution for the existing AVI may be to download the .srt file, rename it it the same as the avi (z.avi z.srt) and the media player will play it automatically.
Keep in mind that that some subs are from PAL, some from NTSC versions, thus the timing may be different.

Hello Attar,
Thanks for your interesting suggestion.
Because subtitles do appear for all but the last half-hour of the movie, my concern is that if I add a subtitles file, would this produce two sets of the same subtitles, until the last half-hour where they were missing?

Since a .srt file is a simple text file, you can open it in Notepad and delete everything up to the point where you want them to start.
In the example, I deleted everything before line 7.
As the file plays, the subs start showing at the indicated time in line 7.

Hello Attar,
Three types of subtitle files are available for download on the webpage that you linked. First, I want to thank you sincerely for taking the time and trouble to find that page for me, but unfortunately none of the files were the right timing. (I tested all of the English subtitle files available for download on that webpage using Windows Media Player.)
The first type did not have the correct time for the first of the subtitles that were missing from the .avi file, but I tried it anyway and it was wrong.
The second type had the correct time for the first missing subtitle, and yet the timing was still wrong anyway!
The third type was for two CDs, and both of these also had the wrong timing when tested with the two CD files (AutoGK had made three files: One complete file, and also a CD1 file and a CD2 file).
I can confirm that I did delete all the subtitles backwards, starting with and including, the subtitle which is the last one to appear on the .avi file.
Do you have any other solutions, either for making this solution work, or for what may be done to successfully remake an .avi file (with all the English subtitles), from the DVD?
I get the impression that AutoGK may not be capable of coping with subtitles.
In your earlier message you wrote:

Would you be willing to let me have a step by step procedure for this, as what you wrote seems promising, but the explanation assumes an expertise with the application which I lack.

Extract Vob Subs from a ripped DVD folder (VIDEO_TS) using VSRip.
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/VSRip
Select (i.e. highlight) the language to extract.
The output is a .sub and an .idx file.
The idx file contains a list of the times that the subs appear;the sub file is bitmaps (not text) of the actual subtitles.
You can look at the times to see if they match the missing subs (it's not a promise that they actually exist though) - although I cannot see why a commercial disk would not have them present.
After loading the the DVD title in AGK, the idx file is loaded via the Ctrl F8 keypress (select .idx from the menu).
If you have the patience, the subs can be tested using the 'Preview button'.

Thank you for setting that out in a procedure. This seems to me to be a form of testing and so I cannot understand what you have explained as a means of correcting the avi. file.
Please explain if this is a means of correcting the file so it shows all the subtitles. If it is, then I do not understand from your explanation how I would use this procedure to correct the file.
(I would also mention that when I used one of the downloaded subtitle files together with the movie's .avi CD 2, the previously missing subtitles appeared, with the mis-timed subtitles from the new subtitles file, superimposed over the originals. However, when I removed the mis-timed new subtitles file, and played the .avi CD 2 file, all subtitles were again entirely missing.)

That is a head scratcher, inasmuch as the "missing" subtitles should have been burned into the video.
The way AGK works (in any cases I have seen) is that when you elect the first option (make 2 CD's) it actually outputs the complete video file then splits it into two parts - CD1 and CD2 - do you still have the 1400MB file that was output?
Demux the subtitles from the original DVD (sub and idx) zip and upload them to the likes of Mediafire and post the link.
Since newbies cannot post links, spell out the link or figure a way to post it partially.
I will see if the entire subs are present and go from there.
Is it possible for you to run the encode again on a PC - I can run a two hour movie through AGK in 20 minutes instead of the eight hours your tablet required.

Thanks for your response.
Yes I have the 1400 MB file and did test all the subtitles files against it, except for those designed for separate CDs which I tested with the CD files.
I did in fact set the "Custom size (MB): 1400".
I can see this setting in my screen shot of the AutoGK dialog box.
Once completed, however it had still made a total of three files, the one large file, and also additionally a CD1 file, and a CD2 file.
The missing subtitles cease appearing from the same point in both the large file and the two CD files.

If by chance you still have the temp folder that AGK created at the time you made the AVI, it should contain the .idx and .sup files.

Don't know, PM to DDP or any other Mod and ask.
If you look at the idx file, the subs start at 32 seconds in, then run to 1:18:01, after that point the next sub is listed as 2:06:42 and continues on to 3 hours 08+ minutes.
Since "Z" is listed as only running for 127 minutes, that's the reason for the disappearing subs.
Is this the files from AGK or ones you extracted using VSRip.

The files that I uploaded are from AGK's temp folder: "agk_tmp".
(When the original DVD is played, its subtitles are all correctly present.)
For making the .avi from the DVD, I first used "DVD Shrink 3.2" before using "AutoGK 2.55".

You're going to have to extract the subs again from the VIDEO_TS folder that was output by DVD Shrink using VSRip and compare them to the AGK version before going on.

Thanks for your message. I have extracted the subs from the file (it was a file) output by DVD Shrink using VSRip, and have put the two resulting files in a zip file (together with an image of the VSRip default settings I used), and uploaded it to Mediafire.
After the wwwmediafirecom address, the rest of the link is:

I do not know if you will be willing to compare the files as you said would be needed. My difficulty is that I would not really know enough about what I was looking at, nor know what to do with it.

I installed DVDFab and used its "Rip" function, which extracted an MP3!
If you wish me to extract the subtitles using this application, then I would need instructions, as it seems to have no obvious options for doing this.

Correct.
Instead of ripping the disk using DVD Shrink, rip it to a new folder using DVD Fab.
After it has been ripped, extract the English subs using VSRip to see if the subtitles are complete.
