Which format to convert videos to?

When I am trying to encode my DVDs and Videos to one single file format. In your guys opinion which would be the format to encode in to have excellent video and audio while keeping the file size relatively small (about 1.5 gb per movie). I was told either DIVX, XVID, or MP4. In handbrake when I select .avi file i have the option of selection H.264 or XVID video codec. Which should I select?

i would go with xvid or when i rip DVDs i use Magic DVD Ripper and encode into divx but thats just my option im sure other people have actual numbers as to witch is the most efficient
