Hey! I know if anyone knows you all would. I have a dvd file that I want to make smaller so I'm assuming the best would be to convert it to avi or divx so I am wondering which would make the file smaler (if there'd really be a difference.) I searched google but surprisingly only came across a couple results that was about comparing the size and they were all mixed opinions. If I had the time I'd take the same file and convert it once to avi and once to divx and see what size they are but I'm kind of thinking that the sizes would be so close it might not make a difference.

You're misunderstanding something.
Divx and AVI are almost synonymous . The size is the same.

The answer is, it depends on what you want to do with it.
If you want to watch it on the PC, play it on a divx-capable
dvd player to watch on the TV, media centers like the "popcorn hour",
etc,etc.

If your aim is to keep a copy on the PC and have the best quality
for the smallest size, then perhaps H264/avc would suffice.
