Yip dont use those nonsense sites that tell you they have the driver yet you have to click on just about every link on the page to find the actual driver download which in all probability doesnt exist and will probably install all manner of malware and useless utilitities and downloaders on your machine.
That was probably the first one that came up on a google search - right?
Dont rely on google - go to the 3com site directly or failing that the Compaq website.
Failing that I will probably have it on one of my driver library cd's so can pop it onto ftp but have a search first and dont be lazy and use the first site that comes up on a search engine - thats how malware and crapware spreads.

I should have read your post more clearly so its not actually a compaq driver and its also not a pc card its a pcmcia card that was added to a compaq armada e500.
I have searched my 3com archive disk and have the driver if you still want it.
Alternatively here is the link for the drivers on the hp website for the armada in case you are talking waaaash.

Can you confirm it is not a Compaq item
Ie its a card you found to install in teh compaq armada and has nothing to do with compaq because 3com at that time was an entitity unto itself.
Pm me and ill send you the driver.

Hi, its my brothers Compaq Armada E500 laptop,OS windows 2000 professional, the card in question is (see photo) installed he lost the pigtail dongle so I bought a new one when I try to connect to internet there is no light on dongle hence no internet, device manager says device is working properly,if you have the driver for this device I will definitely give it a go, http://www.cqout.com/show.asp?u=http%3A...m_3C589C_tp.jpg

My suspicion is it most likely will be the dongle.
Device driver will just test the card not the dongle.
Those dongles were a right pain as they break under strain very easily (stupid design) exposing the pins. We junked at least one a month from the sales guys who didnt realise how fragile they were. Also they have to be switched using the dos util on the cd to work with either bnc or tp so the card may be set to bnc at the moment.
I have some of those exact cards in my old pcmcia/pc-card spares boxes and most still work but about 90% of the dongles don't as they are either broken or the wrong type - look the same but some are shorter in length.

Yeah i will send you some other stuff - doesnt matter about digital signature i think you may need to switch the card into Twisted Pair mode it was previously used with a BNC dongle i think.
I think i have the dos switcher util.
But yes ill send you what i have!
It should have worked the x in the title means it works with the a,b,c,d versions of the card you have - in other words all of them.
I think you have a duff dongle or need to switch the dongle mode!
This brings back bad memories - in the bad old days of wfwg etc confoguring pcmcia cards can be a real headache what with having to modify ndis text files you could be in for a marathon but that config program i sent you should perform a full diagnostic on the card.
3Com (R) Corporation LAN Installation Disk
for the 3Com Megahertz LAN PC Card Family
Configuration and Diagnostic Program Information
Overview
--------
Your notebook containing the PC Card must be
running DOS or DOS-mode only to use this program.
The configuration portion of the Configuration and
Diagnostic Program allows you to change the
configuration parameters for the PC Card
to fit the your networking and notebook set up.
The diagnostic portion of the Configuration and
Diagnostic Program verifies that the PC Card
is installed correctly andfunctioning properly
in your notebook. The basic tests check the
physical components,connectors, and circuitry
of the PC Card and require that the PC Card be
installed in the your notebook.
The Echo tests check the PC Card's ability
to transmit data on the network and
require that the Pc Card be connected
to a network.
Running DOS INSTALL Under Windows 98 or Windows 95
You must run INSTALL.EXE from a DOS or DOS-mode
command prompt.
1. Restart the notebook.
2. Upon restart, immediately press the F8 key.
3. At the menu, choose "Safe Mode Command Prompt Only"
(usually #7)
Configuring the PC Card

-----------------
The command keywords and parameters are not case-sensitive, so
CONFIGURE, configure, and Configure, for example, will all work.
CONFIGURE configures an adapter using command line configuration
parameters
While Command Line Parameters are included here for completeness,
using the Command Line Mode may produce undesired results.
Command Line with Explicit Parameters
-------------------------------------
Command syntax: INSTALL CONFIGURE [ /AUTO /IOBASE:N /INT:N
/TR:N /MODEM:N /OPTIMIZE:N /LINKBEAT:N ]
Each parameter must have the structure "/keyword:value" and
contain no blank spaces. For example: /iobase:300 /int:3
Command line configuration parameters are used to configure the
Pc Card using only the option settings you specify.
Any combination of parameters can be used and you can
modify only a few settings if needed.
/AUTO
The /AUTO parameter configures the PC Card automatically
using interpreted system information.

..still no luck, have tried different settings ..buffer ratio, full duplex.disconnected/enabled,transceiver type. tp (RJ45)/coax (BNC).I'm limited technically but I concur that its most likely a faulty dongle. I will send card and dongle back, might get a refund. this is a great site and I thank you for your time and assistance.

Yes it did sound like the dongle its always best when you buy something second hand that you get both parts rather than chance your arm and go for something that might not work.
Send it back.
Sorry I couldnt help more!!!

From the same seller?
I meant buying one from one seller and the dongle from another.
Not a good idea best to buy it complete from the one seller then
you are more likely that both parts came in the same box.
3com dongles from different cards may look the same but dont always work
with different cards!

I must be spending too much time on the computer i thought you bought both separately.
Duh
Was it advertised as working.
Send it back either way or chuck it in the bin!
Repairing old computers and parts can consume huge man hours, hair , nails and sanity and in the end its cheaper just buying a new one!
