Hello there,

I make this post in order to find out whats wrong with a friends computer, In the last few months he has bought 3 different hard drives (SATA):

1. Western Digital 500gb
2. Replaced Western Digital 500gb
3. Brand New Hitachi 1tb

The first went bad within the first three months so he got it replaced, the replacement lasted approximately 2 months, and the New Hitachi... 30 days. All the HD's had bad sectors on Partition "C:"

His computer specs are as follows:

500 Watt PS
Gforce 8800GT
Intel Quad Core Q6600
4GB DDR2

The first 2 drives had Windows Vista 64-bit on "C:", and The Hitachi had Windows 7 64-bit. He also has an External & Internal IDE HD'a that have never had any problems. He cant afford to be buying and sending Hard drives back and forth and its pretty frustrating to keep having to loose data over and over again. Any help as to what the cause of this is and/or solution will be GREATLY appreciated.

If More information is needed i will gladly post it, thanks in advance;

~Bash

have you changed the sata data cable? have you tried different sata ports on the motherboard?

unless you have bad luck, I would look at the power supply or motherboard.

Sometimes if the motherboard is bad you will get hard drive input/output errors. Most people will blame the hard drive, when it's actually good.

Also check the drives temperatures, need to be below 50 celcius to get long life.

That is very strange to be losing hard drives so soon. My media pc has been running 4x hard drives nonstop for 3 years, but I mainly use maxtors and seagates. But the western digitals are known to be quite reliable..

Might also want to check the motherboard's S-ATA controller, especially if it's an nvidia nforce chipset.

How exactly would I go about checking my sata controller? I'm thinking it has to either be the sata controller or the PSU. I do have an internal IDE drive that has never had any problems and I've had it for years. Is there a simple way I could make sure? I'd much rather it be a PSU problem instead of having to replace a whole motherboard.

If it was a PSU problem though, would it not effect the IDE drive? why would it only be the C partition on every single sata drive I install into the system. I'm leaning toward it being a PSU problem only because I think if it had anything to do with the SATA controller or the motherboard the problem would happen a lot sooner.

Anymore info/help would be much appreciated, thanks!

Intel southbridges are usually pretty good, I'd check the PSU.

the same power that goes to the ide also goes to the sata & as the ide is not having bad sectors problems then must be motherboard problem. if possible, do a scan disk of the sata drive on another computer to see if it has errors & if possible full format it on that other pc to confirm errors/no errors.

What if it was a multi-rail PSU?

True. In this instance then I suppose it would be wise to perhaps use a S-ATA PCI card and see how that goes? (seems a bit overboard to go for a new motherboard)
