Sorry for minimal knowledge computerwise..just bought new laptop
Acer 4810t 14' screen...i am with virgin media cable provider and was advised by shop to use a router (Belkin wireless (g) which says it is for cable connection. insruction are to connect networking cable to router and computer, thus removing from modem. Problem i have is the hub? are different size/connection on the router compared to the modem..router is bigger so cable does not connect to router.
Am i best returning router or is there a way of using a different cable which would work with virgin media modem...i have asked them but they are keen for me to get there own router along with costier price and installation cost!
many thanks

Thread teleported to relevant forum.
While i'm a fan of various Belkin products, I personally detest one particular model of their Routers, had months and months of problems with 3 (identical model) faulty routers (on Virgin Media). After 3 replacements i told the shop (PC World) that their Belkin routers were utter crap and moved to Linksys. Have never looked back as that original Linksys router is still going strong and i have a few more of them too. Am now using one of them on O2 broadband (phone line broadband not cable, i just hang the Linksys off the O2 modem)

what connectors are on the modem? is this a dsl modem which uses a telephone cord from wall jack to modem or is it a coax modem that the coax screws into? on dsl modems in canada, they usually have a female telephone port, an ethernet female port & sometimes an usb port. coax modems has the female coax connector, an ethernet female port & sometimes an usb port.

On cable you can either stick with whatever the supplied cable modem is, and add just a router, or buy an all in one cable modem which comprises a router. I personally prefer to stick with the supplied cable modem and add my own router (i get all mine off eBay though the original WRT54G was purchased from PC World). I'm on ADSL now (phone line broadband), and i have done the same, i've kept the O2 router but all the hard work is done by the Linksys router ie the O2 router simply provides the internet connection (i have loads of pc's and games consoles hanging off the Linksys). On Virgin we had the proverbial Motorola SB5100 and i hung one or more Linksys/Buffalo's off that ~

edit- ddp - the OP is talking about a cable modem

edit- these are what i use ~
Linksys WRT54G (i have a few different versions of these, though they all look the same) ~

At the moment i'm using a WRT54GS, which again looks the same.

Also, my other favourite routers are these, Buffalo WHR-G54S's ~

If i were you i would keep the supplied cable modem as supplied by Virgin, and add a (non-Belkin) router to that..
