Hey, I have a computer with 512mb ram [with 446mb ram usable]
i also have another old computer which really doesnt work, i took out the parts etc and i was wondering if i could take the 128mb ram on the old comp and put it in the newer computer. Im hoping this will increase the performance on the comp since i've installed windows seven [which surprisingly works pretty well for a 512mb ram-minimum ram for seven is 1gb!]

Please, if anyone has any suggestions/tips/etc, please feel to tell, more information can be given, thanks

BIGGBILI.

Are you familiar with what is what in side your computer tower?

Im sure if you google 'how to install ram'or 'how to put in a stick of ram' you will find some simple, easy to follow guides.

Basically just make sure all power is off, disconnect the power cord too. Then you either need to grab the metal casing and not let go while you install the ram or get an anti static wrist strap that you can connect to the case. This is to stop static shocks zaping your computer parts.

Make sure you have an available slot for the memory in your computer, then its just a case of putting it in the right way (dont force it, but it wont go in if you have it the wrong way around)but keep yourselfe earthed by touching the case or power supply. Make sure it clicks in and push the tab locks on each ond of the stick of ram so that they click on to the ram, holding it in there.

Now try turning on your computer, if it runs like normal, congrats the ram works, if something is stuffing up, then power down the computer and take the same steps to remove it. Sorry, you wont be able to use it in this computer if this is the case.

Thats a rather crude guide but its all you need to know imo and its easy to tell if it works or not because its not like its going to ruin your settins or hardware. It either works or it doesnt, and if it doesnt you will know it doesnt because your computer is running strangely.

what is the makes & model#'s of both computers or motherboards? take new ram out of pc & compare it to ram out of old pc to see if identical in notches in the gold contacts area. 1 notch is ddr(you are not using ddr2 which also has 1 notch) or 2 notches which is sdram.

BIGBILI,

No, the number and position of the notches on the modeul tells us what KIND of RAM you have in the PC.

All of the modules will have the same physical layout.

It would be better if you could provide addl. on the make/model etc. of the PC so our answers can be more accurate.
