Hi guys, ever since I've had my computer it freezes at random times. It doesn't happen all the time, but it happens enough that it becomes a nuisance. Sometimes It might go 3 weeks without freezing, but when I'm gaming it is not acceptable to me no matter the frequency.

The computer will freeze at random, and I think it does so more when I'm playing COH (again it doesn't happen all the time but it's bothersome especially knowing I'm letting my team mates down).

Now I scan for viruses, adware, defrag my drive consistently so I know that's not the problem. My computer is a HP m8400f with a quad core AMD phenom. It comes with two 355GB Seagate ST336032 0AS hard drives. My games is installed on the C drive. My video card is the only shitty thing, its a 8500 GT Geforce.

Since I maintain my comp adequately should I consider buying a new Hard drive? If so what which would be the most reliable one? One that doesn't freeze up. Any recomendations?

Also my C drive only has about 74 GB free, which is around 22% and my other drive is even fuller. Could this possibly affect the performance, I've been meaning to buy a new external hard drive for those files but I'm a little short on cash right now.

I remember my comp would freeze at random even when it was new, is the Hard drive Seagate ST336032 0AS the culprit?

Thanks guys.

which quadcore do you have? Some of the first generation phenom quadcores (9500/9600/9700 series - second gen are the 9650/9750)had some deficiencies that made them perform poorly on some games. They require a patch to get them to run better.
Hard drive should be no problem as long as it's a 7200 rpm. They will just slow you down while it loads a new level.
Even adding a PCI soundcard might help you out a little by removing some of the load off of the motherboard onboard sound.

Thanks for helping. The processor is the 9500, and the hard drive speed is 7200rpm. Could you direct to where I could download this patch. The AMD website I imagine?

On a side note is their any way I could find out exactly what cause the computer to crash after I restart?

I went to the AMD website and searched for drivers for the Phenom 9500 but found nothing.

A defective hard disk can cause momentary freezes, but it will do this all the time, probably more outside of games than within them. A bad drive can also cause crashes, but typicaly you can't even get through the windows install if this is the problem.

I would suspect that your freezing has more to do with the mainboard than anything else...HP cuts corners on all the products, but the desktops get the worst of it.

To your question about getting a new hard drive, it might be a good idea if you are running out of space...you can get a drive that is twice as big as both your drives put together for about $110.

replace your videocard as that is what is most likely causing your problem. or upgrade it's driver to latest version from nvidia site not hp site.
