I've just moved in to a new house and i noticed there was a telewest broadband box fitted so i decided to chance my luck and bring the modem from my old address, it's actually my mum's modem but i've borrowed it for now, and yeeha it works i can get internet access, can anyone tell me how this works also my mum got a new modem which hasn't been activated yet, would it work to keep her old one and get the new one activated and will the old one i've got still work?

In all likelihood your access will be shut off once your Mom's new box is activated.

Cable modems are "registered" on the network by their Mac address. The cable company knows what MAC addresses are assigned to which paying customers.

Once the MAC address for the modem you are using is turned off, so will your internet connection.

also the cable companies are just changing to a different encryption method so if it's not gone down before they bring it out it will then :)

you must be talking about cable tv.. there is NO encryption on UK broadband connections

soon as they notice "unauthorised" data usage on the line they will disconnect it.. you might even get a bill for the bandwidth you have used. It's probably just the end of the last month paid by the previous occupants.. telewest (and their nasty friends nthell and virgin) kill the connections within 30 minutes of the end of paid time.

Watch out as well.. the "missing" modem is still their property.. they might log it as "stolen" and you may even get a call from the police.. the cable company know where it is.. it has told the network where it has been moved to.
