copying and booting recovery partition?

First off, hi guys this is my first post on the forums :-)

ok to my question. I have an acer laptop which has a hard drive that seems to be faulty. When the laptop tries booting it just restarts. Alt-F10 to boot from recovery partition does no work either.
If I boot from a ubuntu install that I have on a usb stick, go into GParted, it sees 3 partition and says there is an error with one of them.

Also, if I plug the drive into a docking station on my PC, windows see's the partitions and apon giving a partition a drive letter the drive starts clicking and restarting.

Ok, I brought a new and bigger hard drive, and created 2 partitions. 1 Partition is made the same size as the recovery partition on the faulty drive.
Using ubuntu I did a 'dd' cmd of the recovery partition on to the new hard drive. This went ok. Swapped the hard drives over and booted the laptop. Now I got a black screen with a blinking cursor. Also tried Alt-F10 and it done nothing.

Any ideas how I can get the recovery partition to boot?


Details I have missed out:
Acer laptop had vista basic on it.
I have no cd's or anything with the laptop to aid in recovery.
Recovery partition is about 10gb with 6gb used.
