ive searched and searched so i figured id just ask...

i have a dell optiplex gx260 that i want to upgrade the cpu in, ive already upgraded it from the stock 2ghz p4 to a 2.8ghz northwood, and i want to upgrade it again, i have a socket 478 dual core cpu that fits, but the heatsink does not fit down on top of the cpu, the chip isnt high enough, i want to use the stock heatsink, so i was wondering what i could put between to make it touch and transfer heat well, anything? if not i suppose i could use a smaller heatsink, but id rather not

im also wondering if there is anyone whos knows if the optiplex gx260 will even support it, ive heard it does, but im not sure

the chip im wanting to use is.. well i dont know too much about it, but i can list the serial numbers and stuff

they don't make socket 478 dual core cpu's as they started with socket 775 cpu's. as all 478 cpu's are the same thickness then the problem you are having is not seating the heatink properly. try reseating it. how do you know that the heatsink is not seating on the cpu?

hmmm, i thought they made 478 dual core, i pulled it from a busted laptop that had a core 2 duo sticker on it, but the serial numbers say its not dual core... im confused now

the heatsink isnt seating right because i put some AS5 on it, and put in the heatsink, and pulled it off because i didnt think it was touching, and there was no AS5 on the heatsink, so it didnt even touch the cpu

but if its not dual core, then i dont want it, im not gonna downgrade to a 1.6ghz single core cpu, ill just stick with my pentium 4, dont really need the extra power anyways, just thought it would be nice

If you pulled it from a laptop its mostly a 479 not 478 (same pin count slightly different configuration). They are generally not interchangeable. The 479 is significantly shorter than the 478.

wired48, not always as i've worked on 2 different laptops that used northwood 478 cpu's. 1 i upgraded from 1.7ghz to 2.4ghz & the 2nd i used it's 2.7ghz cpu to upgrade a desktop 2.4ghz to 2.7ghz.
