eSATA (PC) to SATA (internal HDD) Can it work?

So I understand that eSATA and SATA ports are a bit different. The eSATA supplies its own power but will that work with an internal device (say HDD or optical drive) with just normal SATA without needing a separate power supply?

If it doesn't work, is there a way to power the device externally?
