I have a 4 prong power supply for my external and I plugged it in and the light was green on the box then faded out and went dark, I then unplugged it and tried plugging it back in same result. Now I waited a half hour and tried to plug it in again and no response to the light. I have tried other light sockets, but no change in the result. Any ideas on how I can fix this or any idea to what maybe wrong with it. Thank you in advance
Sounds like a bad power supply; these things happen. You can build or buy a replacement cheap enough.
Just to confirm, the test is that the power supply is unplugged from both ends, then you connect it to the wall and not the drive, the light turns on for a second, and then fades away...that is how you tested right?

Yes I unplugged it from the drive and then puggled the power supply in to differen't light sockets. After fiddeling around with it I figured out I have to bend the wire a certain way, so it the cord connected from the light socket to the box of the power supply. I'm pretty sure if I just replace that cord I should be fine, but thanks for your help.
the cord is most likely built into the power adapter so you'll not find a new cord for the adapter. will have to get a new adapter which comes with cord or try to fix that cord as sounds like a broken wire in it.
Thanks DDP I have been looking at buying a new power supply, but so far I've found them to be 22-25+ at that rate I'd rather just cough up the extra 10 dollars or so and just buy a new external case. Well in any case I hope its just a bad wire and I can just replace the wire.
