Getting 5.1 out via SP/Dif cable

OK audio card is a Creative Titanium xfi PCI-E card. Reciever is a NAD-T744.

I have a 5.1 analog speaker setup by the PC that plays both normal stereo and 5.1 depending on source with no problem. the card is connected to the reciever via an optical cable and the reciever has the channel I use for PC audio set to digital in.

But even using a 5.1 wav test file played in vlc player that produces 5.1 on the pc speakers with CMSS on or off in the creative control panel will only produce stereo sound on the reciever. Using the "play stereo mix using digital output" option makes no difference.

Instead of being able to cycle various audio modes like I can on dvd's and tv I have only "downmix" coming across.

DTS and DD packs are installed and selectable but neither makes any difference.

I want my 5.1 support from pc to reciever working so anyone that can help would really be appriciated.

EDIT: Having tested the file by transferring it to my Western Digital TV LIVE boxs and then playing it(also connected to reciever via optical) it also only gets stereo - this leaves me totally confused now and so Lost that those guys on that Island are trapped in a phonebox in comparison.
