Alright, I have a Maxtor 160GB that was an external drive and one day I noticed that it wasn't being recognized in Windows so I unplugged it and when I plugged it back in it was making this strange clicking sound. Fearing the worst I immediately ripped open the external enclosure and plugged the drive in inside my computer and it still wasn't recognized. Is there any way to salvage the data that's on it? I have some video footage that is only stored on this drive and it will be gone forever if I can't get it off this drive. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you!

maxtor and clicking.. I left one in my kitchen for 2 years and it started working again.

It's gone.. you could try the manufacturers repair tools.. but they will probably6 not work on a mechanically failed drive... and will wipe it anyway.

maxtor are unreliable and just die like this.. I use hitachi

I also get that problem but only with certain USB ports. I have researched this as it is a pain only having to be able to use certain USBs. I found information saying that the USB port didnt have enough power to make the hard drive work so you would get a clicking or beeping noise. I contacted Microsoft and Dell (my manufacturer) and both seem to be confused. They recommended that I just buy a new hard drive! Help would also be appreciated.

"It still wasn't recognised"
-Is the port you used set to "auto" in bios? Also, is the port enabled (sometimes PATA ports are dissabled by default). Does bios detect it? Does it show up in device manager? Does it show up in computer management, but without a letter?
