Hi,

I am quite new with the idea of overclocking but I have read quite a lot about it and I want to try it for myself. However since you guys seem to know what you are doing I would like a realiable opinion first. The setup I am currently running is as follows :

Chipset : ALI M5229
CPU : AMD Athlon X2 4400+
GPU : Nvidia GeForce 9600 GSO Fatal1ty (768 MB)
RAM : 2048 GB
Sound : SBLive! 24-Bit

I am willing to gave as much info as you need but I just need to know whether anything is worth overclocking as I am currently running anything at stock and I want to squeeze as much juice out of my hub as possible. (Also can anybody tell me how to unlock cores and whether it is possible on my current CPU)

Many Thanks

You could overclock the video, but I wouldn't bother without a video cooler upgrade...and I'm not sure I would spend the money to overclock an old card.

The CPU has plenty of overclocking in it, but if your mainboard does not support overclocking, this does not matter.

As for the extra cores, you can only do that on the Phenom x2, not on the Athlon x2.

I am not sure if your mainboard supports overclocking or not...as I don't know what mainboard it is. If it is a factory PC (Dell, HP, etc), then it probably has no overclocking features.

My computer was custom built by my dad's friend so it is not a factory PC. How do I find out what mainboard I have ?

Usually, it says it right on the board. It can be tricky, as all makers put the numbers in different places, and sometimes the numbers are placed so you cannot see them without removing the mainboard. Generally, you can find a brand without removing the board...this will at least give you a starting point.

Also, pressing "tab" right after you power up might give you a screen that shows you more info; sometimes the board model is listed, but the bios revision is always listed...and you can usually work backwards from the bios revision code.

Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 0402 12/28/2005

You should be able to overclock with that board...the settings are right inside the bios. Just make sure to be careful about heat.

I'll give it a try. Where will I likely find the settings I need in the BIOS ?
