For future reference, A simple search on the IBM website using the model number (2373-8CU) would have provided you with everything you were looking for.
I recently refurbished and sold 20 of those (T40) and the first thing I did was make a CD of all the latest drivers for the buyers.

Kaymosd, have some patience as we do work for a living & not on this site. i've worked on 3 computers today from replacing a faulty hard drive & reloading all software to cleaning up a pc of spyware, malware & trojans with 3rd pc having to get 2 caps replaced & maybe that will fix it. knock off the pm's asking for serial number as that is a forum rule no no.

Hey,
This is a message for Dailun and/or DDP since you guys seem to know the Thinkpad t40 pretty well. The same exact thing happened to me a week ago. I've managed to install the correct drivers from the IBM-Lenovo website. However, I've run into 3 main issues and was wondering if you could either provide an answer or direct me to the right place.
1. Like Kaymosd - I'm missing a video controller driver (VGA Compatible). I downloaded the driver from the site, but when I go to manual install - I have too many choice. The IBM website just gives a generic description "ATI Radeon/Fire GL Series" - I've noticed that there are about 5 options when I go to manually install - I tried oncee and my computer screen went black....was wondering if you could point me to the correct one.
2. I had a wireless card installed before I reformatted XP - but for some reason windows isn't recognizing it; it doesn't even show up on the system device manager. Any suggestions/tips?
3. I have an unknown device - might be my wireless card - but I have no idea how to find a driver for it or how to get windows to recognize it as whatever it is. Is there a way to do this without taking my pc apart?
Thanks alot - your help is truly appreciated.
Thanks!

Like anything else from IBM, "the devil is in the details."
Did you do your driver search by the MODEL NUMBER and not by T40?
2373-xxx is the model number of the laptop and the driver and specification page should make if clear as to the configuration of your system.
1) ddp's link is the correct link for the video driver and there is only one possible choice.
2) You have an unknown device. It's probably the wireless card.
3) There are 4 possible wireless cards for the T40 series. If you cannot narrow it down by using your model number and the specifications page, you will need to download all 4 and try them one by one.
Hope that this helps.

That's pretty helpful and the response was faster than I expected. I just have one last question wth regards to the video driver - I have installed the driver linked by ddp, but it lists these options when I do a manual install: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7500, ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000, ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600, ATI MOBILITY FIRE GL 7800, ATI MOBILITY FIRE GL 9000, ATI MOBILITY FIRE GL T2, ATI RADEON IGP 330M.
I also have model 23738cu.
Thanks for your help.
Ray

I just wanted to write and say thank you very much! I have the proper video controller driver and also have had my wireless card recognized by my pc.
It's slightly strange that I still have an "unknown device" in the device manager. It's nothing critical, but if you have any thoughts on how to determine what it is and get it recognized, I would appreciate it. If not, it's not a big deal since you answered my wish list.
Best!
Thanks!

You probably need to run the chipset driver. This should update the .inf files and remove the unknown device.
There are 7 or 8 drivers (turns out that there are 9) and I had them listed out in the order that requires the least number of reboots. If I have time later I will post from my notes what the order is.
<later>
This is the order that I have listed in my notes
0 - Networking (always get an Ethernet connection first)
1 - Chipset
2 - Wireless
3 - Video
4 - Audio
5 - ACPI
6 - Battery
7 - Modem
8 - Utility
After refurbing a lot of T40s, I've found that this order requires the fewest number of restarts.

I recently reloaded XP on my ThinkPad T40 and downloaded the drivers you recommneded in this discussion. The lapotop is still not working and when I checked the Device Manager is still shows a bunch of "yellow" question marks. Do I need the Recovery disk in order to get the laptop to work again? If so, where can I get a copy of it? If not, what other suggestions do you have.
Thank you,
Vicki
