The computer I use in my living room is used for watching movies only. The CPU fan it has now is very loud and makes a noisy hum that is very annoying. I want to replace it with a quieter on but am not sure what decible level fan I should get. I want practily no noise. Also how do I find out what motherboard I have so I can find out if they will work together?

I found my motherboard manual and it says my board comes with a surface mount LGA775 socket designed for intel core 2/pentium D/pentium 4/pentium extreme and celeron d processors. Based on this info can someone recommed a good quiet fan for my application.

It will work electronically but it's a "big honkin' thing". Did you measure inside your case to make sure it fits?

BTW, are you sure it's the CPU fan and not the PS fan?

jerecho, do as dailun suggests about the psu as i just finished oiling 2 fans in a customer's psu as i couldn't tell which 1 was causing the noise. noise is now gone.

I use the "chopstick" method to isolate the fan. <G>

Stick a chopstick or wooden pencil into fan to stop the fan and isolate the noise.

I ended up getting the fan at a local shop and it works great. It was a royal pain in the ass to get in though! It's quiet now beyond belief!
