Wondering if anyone can advise on this?

The laptop my partner uses has suddenly developed a problem which initially I assumed she'd caused by knocking/banging it somehow - but now I'm not sure.

When you switch it on, the screen is white with hundreds of thousands of grey lines and it doesn't seem to be booting in the background (if you press off it switches off straight away). Sometimes the screen can display all sorts of wonderful colourful patterns too...

However, when I plug it into a monitor initially there is nothing but its clearly booting in the background and when it reaches the Windows 7 booting screen the display switches on perfectly on both the monitor AND the laptop.

From here the laptop can be unplugged from the monitor and used perfectly fine as normal - until powered off... then the problem re-occurs.

Any ideas? I'd pretty much written it off as physical damage - but looks like I'm wrong?
