It could be the lens is goosed and not detecting discs, you could try a lens cleaner or perhaps under device manager uninstall it and reboot windows to detect it again

hope this helps

You can get a new DVD burner for under $30 shipped; this is a very common failure.

If it is the lens, then the drive will usually still read CDs, but not DVDs.

hi johnnie and killerbug
first off thanks for your reply's i did an uninstall but no joy
i also saw a tut online about going into a folder called "regedit" and deleting a file
when i did it seemed to work i could play the dvd and i went to copy the dvd with "roxio" it froze so i had to power off the pc and when i booted up again it was back to not working! their is an issue ,maybe as well to buy a new one , do you think its a loose connection? maybe i could take the cover off the pc , what do you think?

Hi

First of be very careful about what you edit in the registry make sure you back it up first before ever making changes. In regedit goto file then export, save it in a location u will remember with fle name regbackup and the date after it.

do you remember what the registry entry was and has it returned since you rebooted?

cables are always a good thing to check so wont do any harm.

It bothers me that a reg edit solved it temporarily, this may be down to file corruption or possible virus preventing the drive from accessing antivirus software by disc if you know what I mean lol or it may still just be a faulty driveespecilay if its a couple of years old and well used.

The way i would check it to see if faulty drive or software issue is to put in a windows disc and boot from that if it loads the disc 3 times in a row i assume drives ok, you don't need to load windows at this point just cancel out, its just to see if drive is detecting the disc before you actually boot into windows from your hard drive, if it does detect then its most likely a software issue, for me if its a software issue i would just back up my docs etc and format the hard drive and reinstall a fresh copy of windows, i have spent to many hours looking for software probs and finally reverting to a reinstall so i just go straight for that now lol

hope this helps
Cheers

Uninstall Roxio for the time being and try removing the upper/lower filters.
