My card died and I currently have a 8800M GTX. I'm looking at a 9800M GTS. I think the big difference is that the 8800 has more shaders but the 9800 is faster. I also attached a screenshot of a side by side benchmark. Could anyone help me understand the differences in the real world not the benchmark world?

Thanks

The Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTX is based upon the desktop G92 chip and offers clearly better performance than the GeForce 8700M GT and 8800M GTS due to 256 bit memory bus.

Based on the desktop 9600 GT (G94 core), the 9800M GTS is produced either in 65 nm (512 MB) or 55 nm (1024 MB). The performance of the GTS is compareable to the GT version (due to the higher clock speed). The PureVideo HD engine supports the CPU in decoding HD videos.

Are you sure the replacement will fit? Most laptop cards can only be changed for an identical graphics card. Unfortunately nvidia mobile GPUs are very prone to failures, so it's not all that surprising you've had to change it.

yes it will fit. My laptop and bios support both cards. I'm just curious if there's a big difference in them.

It's a tricky one, as laptop graphics cards aren't direct performance counterparts of their real relatives. There of course was never a desktop 9800GTS, but going by previous naming conventions, I would estimate the 9800M GTS to be something like an 8800GT in terms of performance. I would estimate the 8800M GTX to be something like an 8800GTS (G80 revision), but this is purely speculation, I haven't seen benchmarks. Overall, the 9800M GTS is likely to be a slightly more efficient, and perhaps slightly faster card than the 8800M GTX, but that's just theoretical.
