Having a bit of a problem with physical memory usage using 64bit Windows 7 on an Alienware M17x laptop with 8GB Ram and an Intel Core 2 Extreme CPU Q9300 @2.53Ghz processor.
Basically, even when the PC has nothing but internet explorer open, it will be using 7.99GB of my 8GB of RAM available. The computer becomes extremely sluggish (understandably) and I'm sure that this is just way too much RAM to be using at any one time. Looking at memory usage in task manager, iexplorer.exe will be using around 20,000K followed by dwm.exe (7,000K), explorer.exe(7,000K)sidebar.exe(3,000K) and probably around 20 other different processes ranging from around 90K to 700K.
Interestingly, when I first turn the computer on it will only be using approx. 20% RAM but then if I leave the computer by itself for about an hour, the RAM gradually gets higher and higher and the windows 7 sidebar gadget displays Processor usage at around 10% and RAM usage between 98% and 99%.
As a sidenote, the computer also uses hybrid nvidia graphics, but these problems occur, even when on the 'save power' mode is on so I doubt this is related.
This problem has been driving me crazy so any help on why this RAM usage would be so incredibly high would be greatly appreciated.
It might be the indexing service...now called the search service.
Did you sort by memory used? On my system, SVCHOST.EXE uses about 75MB; it seems odd that this would not be on the list...windows won't work without it.
