I aam trying to install new hard drive in computer I built over 2 years ago. BIOS recognizes new drive but when installing XP Pro, it tells me there is no hard drive. I have reconnected the power cord and sata cord, but still no recognition. Am I not doing something? BIOS says it is config to RAID, not sure if that is the problem. It is a sata drive. Thanx

The old hdd was sata too and to be honest, don't know what happened. So I replaced hard drive. But since it won't boot either. I believe XP Pro is servie pack 3 but I'm not sure. I've replaced drives before without this problem. I do not have a floppy on this computer and everything I've read talks about putting drivers on a floppy. I can put drivers on a cd, no problem. They talk about formatting but I've never done it and do not know how. Funny, I was in the middle of a second build to replace an old desktop that was on its last legs, and both desktops died/crashed and the new build was not up and running. But atleast I have a laptop. Thanx again for all ya'll do for we who are learning.

I built this one myself and it has worked fine for 2 years until recently. I've spent all day reading and looking up stuff on my laptop and will try some stuff tomorrow. I have no doubt that I will succeed, it is just a matter of how much time I want to spend on trying to figure out what happened. I am not going to buy a floppy drive to try and update. Too archaic for me. Has to be a better way. FYI, quad core, 500gb hdd, 300gb hdd (didn't know they should be same size), radeon graphics card, Intel mb. First builds teach you alot. Great cpu, soso mb. 58 and still learning. I will let you know when I succeed and what happened. Thanx for all your help.
shouldn't be multi-posting as both threads are about the same thing. which 1 do you want to close? i'm 51 & still learning but playing with computers since 84.
