Is it possible to do Access Point and Wireless Bridging with a wrt54g with custom firmware?
I currently have a computer running the linksys on wireless bridging to my main router, but the problem is, no other device that connects to my main router is able to see this computer.
Yes. The name of the firmware is DD-WRT. I have it running on the exact same model router as the wireless bridge for my Xbox360.
By the way, computers on the separate 2 routers won't be able to see each other unless you do custom routing settings. They are on two different LANs.
The way I have mine set up is my main router is 192.168.1.1 and my secondary router with DD-WRT has a static IP of 192.168.1.2 on my main router. The LAN address of the DD-WRT router is 192.168.2.2. In order for me to see devices on the DD-WRT router, I had to set up an "Advanced routing" entry in the main router's settings (same model of Linksys, but standard firmware) as:
Operating Mode: Gateway Destination LAN IP: 192.168.2.0
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.128
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.2
Interface: LAN & Wireless
It took a lot of trial and error to get this setup working. Good luck.
Thank you very much for the information, although I have a westell 327w with no option for advanced routing of any sort, so I guess Im going to have to buy another linksys. Thanks very much again.
Before you buy another Linksys, check and see if DD-WRT or another router firmware will go on your current router. I think there is another one called Tomato or something that is popular, too.
Or, if you don't care about the computers on the two different LANs being able to see each other, just leave it as-is. If you don't want to share files between computers, etc, then it doesn't matter anyway.
Your 2nd router will still be able to get on the internet, but you just won't be able to ping computers on router 1 if your computer is connected to router 2.
