Wireless link is only .47mbps

My wife got a new laptop and the interent connection seemed kinda slow. The laptop has a wirless-g card, os I expected great numbers. So I ran a speed test and got .47 mbps down and .60mbps up with a 23ms latency.

I connected it directly to the modem (comcast) and I got 21.17 mbps down and 4.54 mps up with a 10ms latency.

I tested the desktop connected wirelessly via a linksys wireless-b router (both laptop and desktop are using this) and I got 2.48 mbps down and 0.99 mbps up.

I can't test it directly to the modem (it doesn't have an ethernet port anymore since I went wireless)

So my question is, can the linksys wireless-b router really be sucking that much bandwidth out of my connection? I know it's a "B" connection and all but geez...

The routers about 6 years old.

Would I see a huge improvement with a wireless "G" connection? Or is wireless sucking up my bandwidth either way?

No wonder my torrents have been taking so freakin long!

But again, would moving up to a "G" router make a difference, or am so low that something else has to be going on?

can you try it on a similar router to see what the speeds are like? can try a newer router to see what happens.
