I have a PS2 with um, CDGenPS2 and Free McBoot on the memory card for launching my DVDs, I've never tried a dual layer backup before however, does the ESR Patcher Gui that's needed for the games to load work with Dual Layers for the one or two larger games the PS2 has, such as Xenosaga?

Yes the Esr Patcher Gui works with Dual Layer games as well.
