I have an issue with having burned backups playing on my PS2. Some games, ranging from The Bouncer, Dynasty Warriors 5, Silent Hill 4 run flawlessly. However, attempting to play Final Fantasy X-2 and Gauntlet Legends: Seven Sorrows seems to give me a particular issue; the PS2 recognizes the disc as a PS2 format DVD, boots up to the Playstation 2 logo, then hangs on a black screen while the PS2 makes scratchy reading (I assume read error) sounds. The PS2 does not do this when it runs the aforementioned games which work. I have opened up my PS2 and properly cleaned the slides, laser, cogs and even assured that the mod chip is still properly placed and undamaged.
I have attempted to burn Final Fantasy X-2 with Alcohol 120%, DVD Decrypter and Nero several times in all different solutions mentioned on various sites. From burning the DVD on Nero as ISO, ISO/UDF to manually editing the .mds to recognize the .iso (the Final Fantasy X-2 .mds is named ffx-2.mds but is set to read ffx2.iso, for some reason, so I am required to either rename the .iso from ffx-2.iso to ffx2.iso or to edit the .mds, both of which I have attempted to avail), using DVD Decrypter and manually playing around with settings to using Alcohol 120% on "Playstation 2 Disc" format and "DVD-R" format, from using a Dual Layer Patcher (which I don't believe X2 is anyway).. I've tried basically everything.
I have read on various sites that media may be an issue. If someone with a bit more knowledge may provide reasoning why a game like Dynasty Warriors 5 would burn and run flawlessly while X2 would have severe issues, then I would be pleased to listen.
That being said, I've been using DVD+R 4.7 4x (seemingly no-name brand) to burn. I plan to leave for Futureshop (Canadian Best Buy) to purchase some Verbatim DVD-Rs due to reading on many sites that +Rs cause issues and low quality media may also be an issue.
Any insight and/or advice is greatly appreciated. Any mentions of Swap Magic will be met with a chokeslam through the Earth's core.
