Splitting DVD9 games to 2 DVD5's

I have heard about people managing to split DVD9 games into 2 working DVD5 discs but I can't find any info at all on how to do this so could someone make a complete guide? Also, which is best for ps2 backups, DVD9 or not, DVD-r or DVD-rom?
