Swap magic and mod chip?

Hi guys,

One of my friends modded my PS2 and he told me that I had to use swap magic also. I though in order to play PS2 backups you needed a mod chip or swap magic, not both?

i used swap magic without mod chipand it worked burnt ps2 out in the end but worked, i want to mod chip my ps2 and am looking into the pros and cons again, i did my last one about 18 months ago
