Hi I have a PS2 slim model SCPH 70012. I recently played Thunder Force 3 and 4 for Genesis, and I want to get Thunder Force 5 & 6 for my Playstation 2, but they were only released in Japan.
I was looking towards getting a mod-chip and have a few questions:
-I read that v12 has bad lasers that will burn out if I mod my playstation, if this is the case I probably won't do it. Does anyone have experience with V12's NOT burning out using a mod chip?
-I was searching for what the best mod chip might be, many of the threads discussing this are years old, and naturally the chips available have probably changed since 2005. I found the most common chip on the internet seems to be the Modbo 4. Is this chip good? If not, what's better, and why?
-Basically.. I want to play a few import games, I'm somewhat of a collector so I doubt I would burn many games.. but I also do not want to destroy my PS2's laser, what is the best solution?
I want to play those thunder force games, I can understand copy protection but region protection is a load of crap.
Thanks, I'm sure most of these questions have been answered before, but like I said a lot of the threads are quite old.

There is a fix to be done for the V12 if you are going to use a modchip.
Modbo chips are fine, they are a Matrix Infinity clone. The Modbo 4.0 is a good chip.
The Modbo 4 also comes with a Diode fix for the PSTwo Slimline v12.

Thanks for your reply. What is the likelihood that my PS2 laser will die after installing the modchip? I wish I could get a general feel for how many people have it happen after modding their PS2, & how long it takes before they burn out.

The fix comes with the Modbo 4.0, so as long as its done it should be fine.
If by normal reasons the laser does go, they aren't very expensive to replace anymore and you would be replacing it with a better one.

I will consider trying this. I'm still nervous about possibly wrecking something that works fine just to play a few imports. Hmm, and I have enough console's I don't need to have 2 PS2's :).
I'm gonna think about it for awhile, but the fact that new lasers are cheap is a good thing.

An Alternative is to have someone install fmcb 1.8 to your memory card.
"Free McBoot is a method of running homebrew applications directly off a Memory Card as a stand alone loader. No boot discs or modchips are required once installed"
http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58851
If you go this route, ask them to install esr r9b as the ESR.ELF
How to play backups using ESR
Make a iso with DVD Decryptor or imgurn of your game
Patch it with the ESR disc patcher
Burn it with imgburn
Put your disc in the PS2
Start ur PS2 with FreeMCBoot 1.8
Start ESR.ELF

Wow.. I could play an import game using nothing more than a memory card software? That is awesome.

Yes I play japanese or PAL games on my NTSC console.
The only thing is you have to make a backup first, then follow the instructions I posted.
If you do this, also get them to do a MULTI INSTALL, then it works on your other PS2 also, as long as its the same region.
