backing up psx cds to usb hdds using usb advance/extreme

I saw in another thread (closed) that it's possible to back up psx games with usb extreme and play them on a ps2 using usb advance. USB extreme lets me backup up ps2 dvds just fine, but it gives me error messages when I try to backup psx cds. Is there a special step to prepare psx cds to be copied over, or is this no longer possible. I saw at least two users say this could be done, but neither of them mentioned how.
