XSNES9X controller configuration

I want to change the pause emu/go to emu menu button in Xsnes9x from the right thumbstick to the black button. I'm using a controller with no sticks, only a d-pad, so playing snes games is pretty annoying right now since i have to swap controllers to get to the menu to load a savestate. I really like the Xport emulators that allow full configuration but this one only lets you change in-game button definitions.
