I am trying to back-up the Avengers because my child loves it but I know will scratch the crap out of it. But when I open the master disc in Shrink it says it can not read the drive and I have AnyDVD running in the background. Thougths?

if you have anydvd why do you need shrink to read the drive, rip it to hdd then use shrink on the folder.
as for running in the background use the system tray icon & disable anydvd now try shrink, however it may not read the disc anyway as it's a much later copy protection

don't some noobs talk a load of crap?
best advice already given.. latest dvdfab (linked earlier) .. set target to dvd5, rip and burn and check it works.. couldn't be simpler really..
Unless you have older iso's ripped for dvd9 (dual layer) shrink is completely obsolete.. it has no purpose any more, in fact my one and only windows image (for quick installs of other peoples broken systems) I don't even bother to include it.. it's so outdated and pointless.. the ONLY purpose I could possibly see for having something so outmoded is if just possibly you author your own dvd's and want to cram an extra 30 minutes on a disk (for example to make a series fit 4 rather than 4 +1 episode) disks.. that's about it really, and if you know how to author to professional standard it doesn't apply anyway.
as for codecs.. kazaa?.. obsolete.. the h264 in that is garbage.. stutters and bugs.. get CCCP for the latest x264 (without bundled crap like players)

That's what I reckoned too Scorp.. would still go with CCCP codec pack.. last update had the latest stable x264 rather than the 5 year old mk1 version in k-lite which is only really compliant with M$ "standard" h264 files and craps out on modern x264 encoded anime mkv's..
If you have any problems there is a source for "development" x264 releases.. as beta software.. but I won't link due to the beta nature and as one of the people working on it I don't want to field loads and loads of n00b questions and whining when it may have bugs or conflicts with other "versions" that may be installed.
My pal retro has a copy of one of the latest, 3 versions up fro the "stable" in cccp and will vouch for the improvements which we are hoping to declare "stable" soon after we iron out a couple of remaining niggles and release into the pack.

I got Avengers ripped to my harddrive with AnyDVD, but now Shrink is saying I do not have Nero installed when I actually do. Do I need to do something make Shirk recognize Nero?

Just use DVDFab and you won't have all the headaches. The latest version of DVDFab is 8.2.1.5 10/10/2012. You don't need all them other programs only DVDFab.

OK I can try that. But, how can I also get Shrink to recognize Nero?
