Hello good afterdawn forum folks,
I called AT&T asking for an unlock code for my 3+-year-old Cingular-branded-but-now-AT&T Nokia 9300/b. After many transfers, they finally said it would take 3-5 business days. Then they emailed me the following code + instructions:

Unlock Code: 515736172295618
Caution: If this process is unsuccessful five times in a row, the phone will be permanently locked to the at&t network. Do not attempt to enter the code more than one (1) time total. Instructions below will assist you in unlocking your device, if these steps are unsuccessful please contact us at 1-800-331-0500 or (916) 843-4685 from overseas.
Follow these steps to unlock device:
1. Power on the handset.
2. Press the # key once.
3. Press the * key three times (will display a "P").
4. Press the * key four times (will display a "W").
5. Press the * key two times (will display a "+" sign).
6. Enter the unlock code.
7. Press the * key two times (will display a "+" sign).
8. Press the 1 key.
9. Press the # key one time.
The handset is [meaning, should be] now successfully unlocked
Note: To verify the IMEI, dial *#06# on device?s keypad, 15 digit # IMEI will display on the screen. If this sequence does not work, pull the back/battery off the phone and the IMEI will be listed on the back of the phone.

You'll just have to trust me when I say I a) am one of the few non-idiots on the internet who can actually read and follow instructions, and b) I followed their instructions precisely and deliberately.
Nonetheless, their code + unlock procedure did not work. I tried it, carefully, twice, and both times it gave me a red "stop sign" and said that the unlock failed.
I called them back and they said "go to a physical store, they will do it". I went to a physical store, they said "we don't know what you're talking about". I went to another physical store, the guy there told me to go see this guy in Redondo Beach who "is the expert".
Any ideas? Does it have to do with the distinction between 9300 vs. 9300/b? I carefully validated the IMEI code against what the phone replies to *#06#. Is the code just plain wrong?!?!
