Samsung Tocco GT S5230 group problem

Hi. I have just got the Samsung GTS 5230 and trying to create a group to handle bulk emails. The book says go to phone book. Drop down menu create a group. Well the group drop down shows but says empty. I cant figure a way off adding a group or contacts. Any ideas.
