I'm not sure if this is the proper forum for this question, but I'm desperate for help (or at least information). Any input would be greatly appreciated.
We connected a full (3.2gb out of 4gb) FAT32 formatted external HD to my friend's Xbox360 in an attempt to watch a movie. It didn't work, and when my friend plugged her HD back into her computer, all of her files were gone. There is now only a hidden folder called "Xbox360" with a series of files named Data0001/0002/etc, but no program I have can view them.
Are the old files recoverable? What is in the DataXXXX files? Nothing major has been written to the drive since disconnecting it from the Xbox. I've tried several different types of data recovery software, with middling results. Is there anything else we can do? I'd at least like to get a better understanding of what happened. Again, anything is appreciated.
Up to 16GB of space on a USB device can be set aside for use as Xbox 360 storage (for gamertags, saves, DLC etc.). To do that, you connect the USB device, go into the memory/storage settings, select the device, then you have 2 options: -
1. Configure now. If you choose this option, the device will be wiped and the hidden Xbox360 folder will be created.
2. Customise. If you choose this option, you can move a slider to set how much space you want to use on the USB device for 360 storage. This doesn't wipe the device, but it does create the hidden Xbox360 folder.
So I would guess that option 1 has occurred in your case.
To get the stick back to normal, you have 2 options: -
1. Format it while attached to a PC.
2. Go into memory/storage on the 360, highlight the device, press Y and then choose "Remove Xbox 360 storage".
But unfortunately, that will not get your files back if they were deleted when the stick was first converted for use as a 360 storage device. If the files were deleted during that process, then your only hope of recovery is data recovery software.

The drive has been formatted for use as an Xbox 360 Memory Device.
