I'd like to be notified as soon as a ban wave starts. This is so I can take my XBox offline immediately. I could check this forum everyday but I'm afraid I might miss a day or 2. Is there any way I can do this? Thanks.

The only way to know if a ban wave hits is by checking forums or getting on your computer and surfing around. There's no magical alarm out there that's going to ring in your bedroom to notify you.
With that said, if you plan to go offline, you're essentially banning yourself anyway if you refuse to go online anymore.

Right. Thanks. That's what I thought.
Don't want my modded console to be bricked by M$. I have another unmodded XBox for which I buy the games I really like. Games like Halo, Battlefield, Gears of War, etc. For all the other unheard of new games that come out I like to play them on the modded box offline, just to try them out. But recently a friend bought Borderlands 2 which is temporarily out of stock where I am. To play with him I have to use the modded box to go online.
And besides, it seems moddable boxes are becoming rare.

Well, the XBox won't stop working if they ban it, it just won't be able to go online. That said, if it stays offline anyway for burned games, it shouldn't really matter if it gets banned or not as you don't take it online usually anyway.
That said, there hasn't been a major ban wave for like, 3 years, so I wouldn't be too worried. But, you never know!

I thought when M$ bans your console it wouldn't play right even if you didn't go online. I think this happened to me when my XBox got banned a couple years ago. But I'm not sure as I took it back to the store and they fixed it for me. They told me they had to change the mobo or something.

There are indeed people that are that young.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

The only thing a ban will do is prevent the XBox from going online. A few years ago, it used to be that a ban would not allow you to earn gamerscore on the banned XBox without corrupting your gamerscore when taking the profile back to an online XBox, but this has since been changed.
So being banned will not cause the XBox to stop working. Microsoft would get into so much trouble if they actually broke your XBox just because you modded it. I don't know what the deal was with your banned XBox. If it did, in fact break, it had nothing to do with the ban.
