I was wondering if different dvd drives have completely different ways of being flashed or are they all done the same exact way? What is required to do so? Also how do I power on dvd drive while flashing?
Different drives require different methods. A good starting point is to do this: -
1. Identify which drive type is in your 360. If you've got an older "fat" 360 rather than one of the new S models, this image is all you need to identify your drive: -
If you've got a 360 S, Google for info, cos I don't know if you can identify all of the different drive types without actually cracking open the console.
2. Get a case opening tool. You can get them on eBay for a few pounds/dollars. It makes the job easier and reduces the chances of you damaging your case.
3. Once you've identified your drive, download the JungleFlasher guide (Google it and you'll find it on the JF site) and read through the required steps for your drive.
The hardware you need may vary. In some cases, you may not need any hardware at all. In others, you may need a VIA SATA card, a probe or other equipment, but if you don't get all the answers you need from the JF guide and searching around forums, then ask again in this thread.
I personally use a Maximus Lizard for flashing drives as it's a handy little unit that allows you to flash all currently flashable drives, although it's not the cheapest way of doing it. Even though I only flash my own 360s, new firmware can come out 2-3 times per year so in the long term buying a Lizard (or similar device) is still cheaper than paying someone to do it as you'll want to stay up to date with the latest custom firmware.
