I am eventually looking to flashing one of my xbox's although at the moment it has a dodgy dvd drive. It is a well used machine and one or 2 games work eventually but the majority of the time I get the "unrecognised disc" error and this isn't resolved by clearing cache etc so I'm assuming it needs a new drive
So, I Want to try and do this myself instead of paying to have someone else do it, I'm a noob when it comes to xbox modding but I have got a bit of flashing experience with my psp and I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to building pc's and changing optical drives etc... As I understand It I can spoof the drive by copying the key/data from my current drive onto my pc, and then transferring the key onto the new drive... My main question is, does the replacement drive have to be the same type of drive? Or could i say replace an hitatchi drive with a benq drive?

you can spoof another type of drive but, when it comes to system updates you will get errors. your best bet if you are going to buy another drive anyway is to get the same type that you have now.
Ok thanks for the reply, I've just opened up my xbox and it has an hitachi drive which is a gdr 3120l rom version 79, so If i get the exact same type drive do i just use jungle flasher to copy over the dvd key? would spoofing be if it was a diff type drive? thanks for the info! I'll get the jist of it eventually!
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.
Thanks for clearing that up.
because its a v 79 drive I understand that to flash the firmware it needs to be unlocked by using some audio cd or something. Does this need to be done If i was just swapping the dvd key aswell without flashing the firmware?..

Short answer, yes. In order to inject the key into the new drive, you need to have the drive in vendor mode (unlocked).
If you're getting a new hitachi drive, just switch out the pcb boards. Since you have the 79, like you said above, you need the audio cd to unlock the drive. It can be downloaded via the Jungleflasher GUI under the hitachi tab (3120). Then flash your new drive with the latest CFW. LT3 is still being worked on for revisions 78 and 79. To be safe, I'd wait until LT3 is released for your drive if you intend on playing on LIVE. Just a suggestion...
Ahh never thought of just swapping the pcb boards, is that easy to do? I did open my dvd drive up earlier just to see if i could give it a bit of a clean etc, is the board that needs swapping the square board towards the top of the drive? I'll look into doing that instead of messing about swapping keys etc.
I wasn't intending to use the console on live as I do have a second console which is online, although if waiting for Lt+3 means that I can use it on live with less risk of being banned then I may just wait to get the firmware flashed onto it and use that online aswell. So long as I can atleast get the console up and running for now before LT+3 is released for hitachi then I'm happy.

It's the board with the two connectors (sata and power)
I don't know if replacing a hitachi board would involve soldering (I have never actually taken one of these apart), if yes it might be easier to simply swap the laser.

My replacement drive came this morning, Just swapped the PCB board which was a simple case of just unplugging 4 little connectors and putting it in the new drive. All is running smoothly :) Not yet flashed the drive with LT+ yet but its reading games atleast which is the main thing for now. Thanks for all the advice!
