Modded Xbox won't load burned games

I bought a modded 360 off a friend of mine and when I put in a burned disc it says play dvd and when I choose that it loads a white Xbox 360 screen and has a DVD menu like play, fast forward, etc. I know it's not the disc cause they worked last week. I tried booting a DVD and it worked, I haven't tried with an original game though.
He told me that he deleted everything off the hard drive before giving it to me, is it possible he deleted some files he wasn't supposed to and it has to be remodded?
edit - it's a slim model 360

The hard drive doesn't have anything to do with playing burned games. Did you take the XBox online and apply an update or anything? That could have flashed your drive back to it's original state.

I just talked to my friend he said someone may have done a game update while playing Fifa 12, the XBox wasn't connected online though and it's running firmware 2.0.13599. Could it have been the game update?

Yeah most likely the update did it. You need to get it re-flashed, if you can't do it yourself. And never do updates without checking the forum first to see if it's safe to do so.
