As this is for a young kid whose enjoying his holiday break, I'm hoping the new release will be up before the end of the day. If there is no hope of that happening, I would at least like to give him something I'm pretty sure he'll be o.k. with until I can get the new release.

So I'm basically looking for the best possible firmware I can run at the moment. As long as it can run the most recent format before xdg3 it should be fine. I've done all the updates through xbox live and I'm guessing that he won't have a need for playing online.

there is a chance you will not need the newest firmware, i have flashed a lot of drives that did not need it, some 79 drives do not read ap2.5 you may get lucky! just use 2.0 though that is the newest thing released for that drive!
