Hi guys,

I am an old timer, haven't been to these boards in a while :D.

Anywho I was wondering what the latest method is to modding your xbox. Last I had a modded 360, it was x(something 1.6, after which I gave in and just let it update normally. So basically, as of now, I have the most up-to-date normal software on the 360.

Is there any method available now that does NOT involve soddering, is easy to do (since I'm terrible at modding, completely nil in the head when it comes to this, and not too expensive?

Thanks.

xk3y - Optical Drive Emulator. Acts as if it is the Xbox's DVD drive, but loads games stored on a USB harddrive. No soldering.

JTAG - Motherboard hack performed on older dashboards. Allows all code to be run. Games, emulators, dashboards, media players, etc run from hard drive (internal & external). Soldering involved.

RGH - A modchip for *all* Xbox 360 consoles. Allows the same thing a the JTAG hack above. Soldering involved.

Or simply flash your drive with LT 3.0, no soldering involved and can be done relatively easy.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

I see. So what's the wiser choice (because I want to backup/play games and keep on doing so, so I don't want it to just "run out").

Also how exactly can one flash the drive to LT 3.0 from the latest firmware? If there's a method that doesn't involve buying an expensive product I'll be happy to hear it

Is xk3y difficult to use? It looks somewhat complicated to install.

Edit: Wow the xk3y is incredibly expensive. $150. Is it guaranteed that this will work long-term and not just be something that works for two updates?

*ahem* you want to backup/play your games.

USB360Pro is less than the price of 1 game. I wouldn't call that expensive.

No.

If you can disassemble/reassemble a 360, then it's easy to install.

Originally posted by luckcandy:

Depends on how yo look at it. That's just the cost of a little more than 2 new games.

This is a game of cat and mouse, but it looks like the k3y is here to stay. The way I see it, the worst that could happen is Live access can get disabled. But I'm sure Microsoft tried that already.

Not to mention, not having to buy discs with the xkey. You'll earn that $100+ dollars back with a few dozen games.

I don't know guys, $150 is way too much for me. There's so much stuff that I can buy with that amount, and I've never bought $60 games.

From what I understand x360usbpro is used to flash to LT 3.0+? Why not use this method instead of buying something that's nearly 3 times the price? Is there any particular advantage of the xk3y other than the whole no-disc thing?

It seems you've made up your mind and have decided to go the "less expensive" route of flashing. And that's fine. But keep in mind the tools you need to rip and burn correctly:

(low end prices with shipping prices roughly factored in)
$35 - Xecuter USB360Pro.
$25 - Spare Xbox 360 drive to rip.
$25 - Lite-On iHas drive to burn.
$25 - 1st pack of Verbatims (when on sale).
$110 Total
So by the time you're on your 2nd pack of Verbatims, you've spent $135 bucks.

Xk3y costs about $100 - $110 at a lot of places online.

I paid about $120 for my xkey. It would have been like, $95 if I had chosen the standard shipping, but I wanted it faster. And as mentioned, if you plan to rip and burn your own games, you'll need all that shit. So much easier to install the xkey, and drag and drop an ISO file. No flashing, no burning, no buying discs, less chance of getting banned, and you don't have to open your XBox and re-flash your God damn drive every time newer games come out that block the old firmware.

Seriously?
For flashing:
Needle - taken from my mother's sewing basket - free
Wire - had this laying around - free
A switch - bought two off ebay - 1,50 Euro shipped
Getting my lite-on drive's key done in 10 minutes
USBPro is for noobs that don't know how to PMT
For burning:
DROM drive to rip - bought off ebay, used the 2nd switch for modifiying - 15 Euro
Lite-On iHas drive to burn - bought off ebay - 15 Euro
Verbatim disks - around 1 Euro each on ebay, bought 20 - 20 Euro
51,50 Euro total

xK3y: 120 Euro atleast, + a decent harddrive to store the games: another 100 Euro
220 Euro total.

Still, at the end of the day, you still have to keep buying discs. After the course of a year or two, ripping all his own games, and probably downloading some, (Let's quit pretending that everyone doesn't do it), the cost of discs would end up equaling an xkey. Not to mention, who wants to have to keep reflashing new firmware when it comes out? Stick the xkey in and you're done. If they release new xkey firmware, you drag and drop it on your external hard drive and you're done. You don't have to open your XBox, hook the drive up to your computer, worry about what kind of drive you have and if it's gonna be an easy or hard process to flash, wondering if your PC motherboard is gonna be compatible for the flashing process, etc, etc...

I'm sure you're an advanced modder, so this may be a walk in the park for you, but for most people, being able to drop an xkey in their XBox and not have to mess with reflashing every month will be so much easier and worth it, regardless of cost.

And external hard drives are dirt cheap all over the internet now days. Just so much more simple for the average person who doesn't want to learn how to flash and have to keep doing it every month when new firmware comes out.

Uhm, yea, LT 3.0 has been out for about four months and at the moment it doesn't seem like MS is having anything coming against it. So no reflashing every month.
By the way, just check my calculation, there is a difference of 168.50 Euro between a drive flash and an xkey, and it already includes 20 discs. So that means you could get a good setting for ripping and burning and 188 discs for the price of an xkey and a decent external harddrive.
And PMT is just a walk in the park, simply connect the needle with the xbox 360 metal case using the wire for ground, then probe one soldering point on your drive board and follow some instructions. No soldering, no cutting, no nothing. You have to get the key off your drive for the xkey anyways, or have the devs been able to implement an auto-dump function by now?

I am seriously going to piss myself laughing if MS manages to ban the xkey users. There has been absolutely no proof that it is any more secure than LT 3.0, as there hasn't been a mayor ban wave in years and the last one was before the xkey existed, for all we know MS could be collecting console IDs for the next ban wave by now (not that I think they do). There have been only a lot of Xkey users running around claiming that it is oh so secure. And before you take the missing ban waves as a proof that the xkey is secure you should consider that there haven't been any massive bans of LT users too.

Hey Eisherz, I just got my Philips DROM drive and is flashed with 0800v3. Just wondering, I just ripped my first XGD3 disc with it and it took about an hour and a half. Is that normal or can I untick process AP2.5 and let ABGX patch it? The AP2.5 is what took all the time.

Yeah, 3.0 has been out for a while, still, that doesn't take away the fact that other firmwares have come out and a month later, there's another one...

That said, you're right, there is no proof that the xkey is safer. But, no modded drive... or modded drive... I'll take the non-modded drive as my bet on the safer method. But, that's just me.

Not to mention, at the end of the day, I just like having 200 games on my hard drive and being able to scroll through them and play, no putting discs in and out of the XBox, no burning discs, etc... Just more convenient and an all around smoother application and method.

Do you have the dae.bin file? It definitely shouldn't take that long. Do you have all the right settings?

Nevermind, I found my answer in another forum.

When ripping your own discs with the latest Xbox Backup Creator v2.9 Build 350 you should have "processing AP2.5" unchecked. This adds an extra hour to each game rip and is not required. This option is only used when topology data is being collected for development purposes.

I guess it all depends on whether you are on a budget or not. I'm not exactly made of money so had to do it as cheap as possible. Flashed my xbox this week and didn't buy any extra hardware to do it like an Xecuter or anything. It might make the process easier but depending on your xbox model it isn't essential.
Spent £15 on a mixture of Verbatim, aone and tesco discs, and so far both the Verbatims and aones are working fine. had one dodgy burn on a tesco disc which I burnt at an imcompatible speed (this was my first burn..) Copy these to my hard drive before playing and games are working flawlessly. I also bought an Ihas drive which was £20. Again this isn't essential but makes burning newer games easier and a lot more stable.

Only just heard about the xK3y upon reading this thread and I have to admit it does look brilliant and a lot easier but unfortunately It's a bit to pricey at £90 for me.

so back to the op, It all depends on what you can afford. Flashing is the much cheaper option imo and will still work, just you will need to burn games rather than just copying them onto a drive.
