I'm pretty new at all this, but I was wondering if it's possible to get around the incompatibility issue with the original xbox games? I have one particular game I'd like to play (ESPN NFL 2K5) and it says it's not compatible. I'm assuming backwards compatibility was removed in an update at some point because I've played original xbox games before on my 360, though not lately.
Is there any way to get it back short of JTAG?

Go find list of compatible games not all games can be played,as for jtag unless you have dash 7 your out of luck you'd have to get rgh instead the two are not the same thing, best bet if no go go get an original xbox & chip it they're as cheap as dirt problem solved

See, that's the thing. The game IS on the compatible list and I've got an MS hard drive, which I've read can be a problem. There doesn't seem to be any obvious reason why it won't play.

Have you tried any other original xbox game that is on the list?If so and they dont work it maybe something to do with your partition 2 on your hard drive. After formatting the xbox hard drive sometimes the compatability to play xbox originals which are on the list are lost cause of this.I had to manually replace the partition so it could update. When you place the disk in the drive and it asks for a update does it fail?If so then its your partition other than that its a head scratcher..Let us know if it tries to update or what error exactly you get.

I found one thing that might be the problem. Apparently if you format your 360 hard drive it can lose the ability to play original xbox games. I don't actually remember formatting mine, but I can't swear that I never have either. I found a tutorial on how to restore the partition, so hopefully that works.
I'm still waiting for my transfer cable in the mail, but hopefully it all works out.

Before you attempt to transfer anything two things i'd recommend,
backup the source hdd in case transfer fails as you could loose all data from both drives
The transfer cable i used from ms deleted all data from original hdd check that if there's a way round it if you want to keep it intact on source drive assuming it still does delete
handy apps
360 content manager
xplorer 360
xport 360
like i said be careful before transfer read some tuts & read em again to be sure

I had this issue after formating. make sure your hooked to the net and can connect with xbox live. smaller scratches affect a disc worse than larger ones if there in the wrong area. I had 3 games on the compatible list. if there not scratched and the dvd drive isnt getting tired(old) it will update through xbox live and all will be good so try a few games that are on the list before you give up. I just got mine working 5 days ago doing this. I know your not jtaged but i got one of those to and it will boot all xbox originals not just the list. the console i did the first thing with isnt jtaged to clarify
