Okay i had a xbox 360, 0lder model a 2006.
It had a very loud fan, sounding like the fan was spinning up alot faster then normal but it wasnt red ringing, i tested it for over a hr no red ring just a loud quick spinning fan. Im trying to sell it and read online that the thermal compund probably went bad causing the fan to spin quicker figuring i could get more for it the better it sounded. So i took it all apart. took the x clamps off, cleaned most of the old thermal gunk off and put some new stuff on. used screws with 2 metal 1 nylon washer on the outside of the metal cage and 1 nylon washer on the inside inbetween the heat sink and motherboard, if i went anymore the screws wouldnt catch. put it all back together and now it red rings. is it possible i put too much thermal goop on it? what else would cause the red ring, ive taken apart plenty of xbox and never had this issue. i dont know what else to do. please help as i had buyers set up for this week, thanks.

What i usually do is with RROD is make sure both the CPU/GPU are cleaned to a polished mirror finish with a alcohol wipe/cue tip.Its possible that you did put too much thermal compound on,you only need a thin/even spread(Artic silver if possible). With the tightning of the screws theres just trial and error,i use quarter turns given to each screw so all four are even and hand tight so not to break the chips or mobo.Because everything is cold when powering up and to get the compound to do its job i remove the internal fan and then power up the console.I find letting the lights run down to 2 and carry on for another 30 secs, power down and leave to cool(even using a normal room fan)to blow cold air over it.Ive fixed dozens this way. However all consoles are temperamental and most poeple will agree there is no 100% ONE way of fixing a console. What works for one does not necessarily work for another.

I cant get the lights to run down to two. i used a thermal compound. TG 1 , its the best i could by locally. cleaned the cpu and gpu both so they were shiney clean. when i run it the taller heat sink gets hot to the touch the shorter one (under the dvd drive) stays cool. i ran it without the fan and it didnt run down to 2 lights. and liek i said the taller heat sink got hotter then the shorter one alot quicker. i put a very thin layer of the thermal compound on the cpu and gpu. dont know what else to do, i snugged the screws with a screw driver, theyre snugged up pretty well, if i keep tightening it feels like theyll start to break, i guess i could try backing them out a little, idk what else to do. thanks

The XClamp fix normally does more damage than it helps, especially when you don't know what you're doing, which is plain obvious in this case. Too much pressure can kill an Xbox 360 pretty fast, just put on the old XClamps again and try if it helps, if not you've ruined the board.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.
