i received a message from xbox live saying i need 2 security proofs on my account. does anyone have any idea what this is about?

Yeah, it's related to security on your Windows Live ID. Sign into your account on the web, then go into your account settings and you can add a second email address, cell phone number, trusted computer and so on. It makes your account more secure, which is why MS are trying to get people to do it.
