Hello,
Am in the process of purchasing a Xbox 360 for my son during this holiday season and would like to have it modded so I can play games off of an external HD. Been reading a bit about modding and seems to be way over my head for the time being but will be reading more.
However, the question that i have is which Xbox 360 should I purchase - 4GB or 320 GB? Is there any difference in modding the above 2 models or is it the same process for both? Or is there another xbox 360 model that I should purchase that would be easier to mod?
Will it be possible to go on Xbox Live if xbox is modded or is the threat of ban always present on a modded unit?

1) You can only run games of a external / internal hard drive using a a rgh / jtag console. http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/threads...-guide.804054/. I have never done this since I use xbl and don't want to get banned.
2) The 320g comes with a hard drive installed. The 4gb unit does not come with a hard drive( sold separately). The consoles are mostly the same other than that.
3) There is no such thing as a safe modded XBL console. You may or may not be detected at anytime since MS does random checks/banning. They even at times in the past have made updates that have rendered modded consoles almost useless( flashing the DVD drive back to stock( if you had a spoofed drive, you no longer could read discs), corrupting the hard drive so all saves, downloads, ect would become useless. They have even reset gamer scores and labeled people cheater.

If you were planning on using an external HDD then a internal or side HDD is pretty much a wasted commodity.J-TAG will not allow you to use xbox live and will only have a freestyle dash.RGH can have dual nand capabilities so you can switch between xbox live safe and linux.All this depends on motherboards,phats and slim types.If you are new to all this then i don't recommend you try without practice on old motherboards as they require soldering to fine points,wiring to lengths and programming.The above link on Keebles post is probably the best TUT for JTAG/RGH info.Another option is using an emulator such as a xK3y.These can be expensive and would require tools to extract your dvd key and inject it to the xK3y.There you can run an external HDD with your backup images and is deemed xbox live safe.Flashing your dvd drive with modded firmware is another option,but this means having the tools required to mod the firmware,creating backups and burning discs with a compatible DL burner either IHAS or burnermax enabled drives.However some slim drives require unlocked pcb's.Look at the Jungleflasher link below and follow the link to the TUT download. All modding is not 100% safe but with the xbox one out in the market i don't see Microsoft caring too much about a 9 year old modded system other than jtag and xbox live as that is an instant ban.Below is a link to a uk site with info regarding the emulator which explains a little about it.Pending on your location search accordingly.

Well, I was thinking of purchasing the ones on sale this holiday season and the options that I have are - 4GB and 250GB. So, is there something specific I should look for on the box since everyone keeps mentioning - "All this depends on motherboards,phats and slim types". Please let me know if something on the box will give me some information on which models to avoid and which ones to get.
The dual nand feature seems to be a preferable choice. xK3y also could work by allowing access to xbox live, does it not?

I got a 4GB XBox 360 E console.
One of my colleagues using Xecuter chips. Is this a preferred way to go as well?

To be fair, M$ hasn't reset gamer scores or labeled people "Cheater" because of modded consoles, but because of hacked lobbies for one of the Calls of Duty, for example (or bought fame, bought cheats, hacking...). Also there have not been any higher numbers of banns for the last three to four years, so with recent methods (flashed drive/Xkey) you are pretty save. The consoles (or better, the drives) were flashed back to stock once (if I remeber correctly, in 2010), but you could still flash them back to custom firmware. Also when you got banned the saves and so on won't become useless, you just couldn't transfer them to another console any more. And with the Xbox 360 slowly leaving the market now that the Xbox One is out Microsoft may not do any more updates and bans in the future.
nkaufman, with "Xecuter Chip" I assume you mean a Reset Glitch Hack? Team Xecuter is one of the console cracker teams. If you want to go on Xbox Live that is out of the question, because with a RGH console you can't do this any more. I'd suggest an Xkey over a drive flash for you, because you want to play games off the harddrive, with a drive flash you still need to burn games. Also get it done by someone, mainly because the Xbox 360 slim is a pain in the a$$ to get the drive key.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

My requirements were:
(1) Play games off of a Hard Drive
(2) Play online if possible, preferable but not necessary
(3) Console system updates work, preferable but not necessary

Get someone else to mod it. Xecuter Pro is a tool for connecting Xbox 360 drives or harddrives to PC to flash the drives. You can't play games off the harddrive then. Also if you have dual nand, you can only play backups off the harddrive with the hacked nand, that you can't use online. With the original nand you need original games. Also it's more complicated than the Xkey, which means more expensive.
