xbox dvd drive is locked?

wanted to update my Xbox 360 drive from ixtreme 1.2 to current LT 1.9 to play current xbox backups but was told the drive was locked and need the original key? Is there a way around this?

You can dump the FW the drive has in it right now and copy the key to flash the LT 1.9 .
